About the David Packard Medal of Achievement

The  David Packard Medal of Achievement Award recognizes significant contributions to the advancement of the high-tech industry and for distinguished service to the community, the industry and humankind. For the past 50-plus years, we have recognized genuine leaders of the high tech industry.

Highlights of the Event

TechAmerica hosted 300 guests for the 53rd Annual Medal of Achievement and Innovator Awards reception and dinner on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club in Menlo Park, CA.

This premiere event, which included a very prominent guest list honored Ray Lane, Managing Partner of Kleiner Perkins and Executive Chairman of HP, as recipient of the 2011 David Packard Medal of Achievement Award.

The event began with a late afternoon special pre-reception, hosted by the TechAmerica Foundation and sponsored by SAP, on the large veranda overlooking the golf course and practice links at Sharon Heights.

The main cocktail reception officially began at 5:30pm to provide an opportunity for all guests to meet Ray and to mingle with the evening’s award recipients, speakers, and sponsors.

Dinner began at 7:00pm and Dan Varroney, Acting President and CEO of TechAmerica, served as Master of Ceremonies. Guests included many C- Level executives from TechAmerica member companies and partners and principals from the venture capital and financial communities.

Three head tables were needed for the many VIPs and special guests and were anchored by Peter Boni and Dennis Stolkey, Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively, of TechAmerica. Among the VIP guests included:

  • Meg Whitman, CEO of HP
  • Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google
  • Marc Benioff, Chairman and CEO, salesforce.com
  • Henrik Fisker, CEO of Fisker Automotive
  • Tim Shriver, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Special Olympics
  • John Chambers, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Cisco Systems, Inc.
  • Tom Anderson, Chairman of Public Sector for TechAmerica and Group President, Wyle Information Systems
  • Hank Steininger, Managing Partner, Grant Thornton LLP, Global Public Sector
  • Steve Westly, The Westly Group
  • Dr. Jared Cohon, President, Carnegie Mellon University
  • Peter Glynn, Stanford University
  • David Veneziano, CEO California Division, American Cancer Society

The formal program began at 8:00 PM with TechAmerica’s Innovator Awards.

  • Eleven Innovator Awards were presented to recipients including Entrepreneur of the Year, Corporate Wellness, and Community Service and for their contributions to the technology industry in eight separate industry segments.
  • Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff, who as last years’ Medal of Achievement honoree continued the tradition of helping to present the 2011 David Packard Medal of Achievement Award to Ray Lane. Fittingly, Marc also acknowledged the many contributions of Ray’s wife, Stephanie Lane as the real key to his success.
  • Ray then presented personal remarks in acceptance of the Award and paid special tribute to the many valued lessons learned from his father, and reemphasized his core belief that the Silicon Valley will be the engine of American growth in the next 10 years.
  • Cisco CEO John Chambers, delivered a Champagne Toast to cap the evening’s celebration. He noted that Ray’s Fisker Karma, an electric automobile prototype (which was parked out front), was a fine example of how the venture capital industry helps America reinvent itself.

A dessert reception immediately followed dinner and gave guests a further opportunity to extend congratulations to the award winners and to continue the celebration.

Partial list of our sponsors includes HP, Cisco, KPCB, Accenture, FlexJet, Grant Thornton, InformationWeek, Quest Software, salesforce.com, Fenwick & West, Varian Medical Systems and The Capitol Bay Group of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.
